Exterior paint averages $25-$40 a gallon, and a 3,000-square-foot home takes 15 or more gallons of paint, or $375-$600 just for the paint. However, really premium paint can cost $50-$100 a gallon, or $750-$1,500 for that large home. Doing it yourself also requires renting a pressure washer or sprayer for $50-$100 a day; extra-long ladders or scaffolding at $20-$75 daily; and a power sprayer for $50-$100 daily, plus masking tape, drop cloths and other supplies. However, it's possible to paint a large, two-story house for materials-only costs of $400-$600. House Painting Broomfield CO
Hi Chandler, This is such a great blog. I have spent some time reading the comments and find it so interesting. While reading the request from some people i kept thinking is there some way i can help. I myself have been painting and plastering over 26 years and have gained a lot of knowledge in my time. Over the last 12 years i have concentrated my efforts on Scoping measuring and quoting. Over that time i have designed a program that can measure labour, material, travel, margin etc. Weather it be interior, exterior painting or plastering anything realy. I am from New Zealand. We measure in Metric and Liters not imperial and gallons. This is not a problem as i can easily change the formulas to give me the correct measurements. The price of paint and materials are alot different in New Zealand too, but not to worry as i can also change the formulars in the forward costing tab so were reading from the same page. Please let me know if i can help and please delete if this is not the place for me to inquire. House Painting Broomfield Colorado
Hi Kim, we’re glad you like the site. You’ve asked a really good question. We recommend keeping a consistent pricing structure no matter what the area. Some painting contractors will try to raise their price if the area is very affluent, but if you have a consistent estimating system, the pricing should take care of itself. More affluent areas usually have larger houses, so your pricing is already going to be higher when considering the job size. You shouldn’t price based on what the area is, but rather, what do you need to charge to make your target profit margin. House Painting Broomfield CO
Our number one suggestion, is to hire a LOCAL small-to-medium size, owner operated painting contractor! These painters will give you the best quality at reasonable prices! Big contractors ALWAYS hire sub-contractors (your local painters) and you end up paying the Local Price + Big Company Overhead & Profit + Salesperson’s Commission, which is typically 100% more that you would otherwise pay to the local owner-run outfit. When You Screw Up Will you mess up a couple times? Definitely. More than a couple. I have messed up a lot of painting estimates. But every time we mess up (and we still do), we learn from those mistakes and never make the same mistakes twice. Screwing up and failing is how you learn. Be ready to make never-ending tweaks and adjustments to your estimates. There is no way to be in business and not screw up. Learn to embrace those failures, and learn from them. If you do screw up your bid, that’s ok. You have to price yourself incredibly low to actually lose money. So don’t sweat. Just learn. House Painting Broomfield CO
Hi Paul, square footage is a big factor, but to ball-park a 4bd 2 bath in poor condition, it could be anywhere from $1.50 to $2 per sq foot with heavy prep. If we say it is 2,500 sq ft. a good price could be between $3,500 – $5,000. That can seem expensive to some people, but again, heavy prep work changes everything. It also depends if you are doing the FULL interior; Walls, Base-boards, doors, is it coverable in 1 coat etc. House Painting Broomfield Colorado
I own a paintung (as does everyone else here of course), but I just wanted to mention my husband was a union painter for almost 10 years in the union, so theres really not job we cant do. With a sprayer or brush, industrial, residential or commercial. From houses to the ships that come to our local shipyard/docks. We decided to start our own business after seeing all the money he was making his company; with being one of the top 2 painters in our city. Unfortunately just days after establishing our business, COVID hit our nation. So, as we are struggling something fierce right now….we do have the skills, talent and ambition to do jobs..that we just need a little assistance finding lately. House Painting Broomfield Colorado
Hey Chandler, we have a house 2565 sq ft with the old wood trim on windows and doors. Doors are solid dark wood. We would paint all walls and doors and trim and baseboards. We also would be painting the cabinets in the kitchen from wood to white. We are trying to determine a final all in labor cost + a timeframe to do the job. The trim is trim time is throwing us off a bit. And personally, thank you very much for your time and sacrifice on this blog you have helped many many people. Broomfield House Painting

Homeowners report that painting a home’s exterior costs an average of $2,926 with a typical range between $1,735 and $4,122. The average price per square foot ranges from $0.50 to $3.50 depending on your location, condition of your exterior and accessibility. Stucco and brick cost an average of $1 per square foot more than vinyl or wood. The average 2,500 square feet home costs an average of $4,000, though it can range from $1,250 to $8,750.

You’ll spend between $500 and $3,000 or $1 to $3.50 per square foot to paint concrete. However, expect to pay $2 to $7 per square foot since concrete almost always needs a coat of primer first. Double that price if the concrete requires stripping. Concrete is porous. Sealing it not only helps blend foundations and walls with your home’s aesthetic, but also seals it against water. Repairing or resurfacing concrete costs $300 to $500 for every 100 square feet.

Hello I been reading your blog. Filled with great information thank you. I have a question. I have been doing projects for these people for some time. I do a lot of carpentry and painting. They want me to do their interior painting. 1 problem they are planing on retiring and selling the home. It is in great shape, but the wife wanted to paint every room in the 2100 sq foot home. They got a price of $14,000 from 1 painter. I spoke to them and told them the paint and walls for the most part are in good shape and they will not get the money back when they sell for painting. I recommended doing what really needs to be done. I know why did I talk them out of a good money job , I am honest thats why. Problem is the base molding being 8′ with quarter round on a wood floor throughout and all the window casings, doors and door casings need painting. Plus a wall over fireplace a full bedroom ceiling walls closet.Bathroom wall entry from garage room. but all base molding on lower floor and half on upper floor needs to be prep sanded and painted. I will be using epoxy to fill some areas and 2 doors need to come off and work in garage due to large cracks. How do I price such a job that is so spaced out? Please help me I am lost for a price and need the work but don’t want to give it away. Thank you jim House Painting Broomfield CO

I’ve got approx 1,500 sq ft house to paint. All trim is stained wood with poly, trim is to be sanded, primed n painted gloss white with 12 interior doors. 4 inch crown as well throughout. Minor drywall repair also. I need the work right now so I’m trying to bid the job so I get it but not leave too much money on the table. I’m thinking about 1,750 to do the job…labor only. Any help? Hello, I’m Interested I’m beginning a painting business in homer Alaska and am curious on the price for bidding. My friends parents had a side of their house estimated and they said it was going to cost them a whopping 3500 dollars! Very small area to paint for that mark up price but everything in Alaska is very expensive so I was curious if that was normal. Also wondering if small towns are better or worse for new painting businesses? Would that mean for less clients but less competition? I’m very familiar with both interior and exterior painting but am very much skilled at new construction/production painting. I’m just not sure if somewhere like Alaska would be good for business especially during the winter. House Painting Broomfield CO
Thus if you want to paint 2 rooms of approximately 150 sq. ft. each (300 sq.ft. total), you will be paying about $4 per sq. ft. However if you are painting the entire house, your base price is about $2.25 per sq.ft. for a 1 storey home with a total of 1700 sq.ft. of living area to be painted (including closets / staircases). A 2+ storey home of same size will cost about $2.45 per sq.ft. House Painting Broomfield CO

Choose the best quality paint you can afford; it lasts longer. Experts estimate that the outside of a house should be painted every 5-7 years, but less-expensive paint may start peeling or fading in 4 years or less while really high-quality paint will hold up a bit longer. Better Homes & Gardens[1] describes and compares the different types of exterior paint while FastFacts.com[2] reviews specific brands.

If less than half the old paint is left, however, it may be worth stripping it all off. Guertin gets rid of stubborn remnants using shrouded grinders (like the PaintShaver), infrared paint strippers (such as the Speedheater), or chemical strippers (like Multi-Strip), then smooths the wood with a course or two of sanding. When siding (or bank accounts) can't take the shock of a total strip job, Rich O'Neil, of Masterwork Painting in Bedford, Massachusetts, has successfully hidden rough, well-adhered paint under Peel Bond, a thick primer. So I have an odd question. Ive been painting for years but this is the first time I have run into this issue. I have a client who has some concrete block walls in his basement he wants painted. The issue is that the walls do not complete a room so there is no way to calculate the square footage as a footprint. However the total wall length is 140 feet by 8 feet high. So how do i calculate labor since I can’t determine the square footage of a room? Do I use the square footage of the surface area of the walls at 140 feet long X 8 feet high? And if so what do I charge per square foot for the surface area? Again this only labor, the client will be buying the block sealer/primer and paint. For a reference, if I was painting a 400 square foot room I would charge 2 dollars a square foot labor. So based off of what I charge using the square footage of the footprint of a room how do I determine what to charge when I cant calculate by the footprint of the room?
