When You Screw Up Will you mess up a couple times? Definitely. More than a couple. I have messed up a lot of painting estimates. But every time we mess up (and we still do), we learn from those mistakes and never make the same mistakes twice. Screwing up and failing is how you learn. Be ready to make never-ending tweaks and adjustments to your estimates. There is no way to be in business and not screw up. Learn to embrace those failures, and learn from them. If you do screw up your bid, that’s ok. You have to price yourself incredibly low to actually lose money. So don’t sweat. Just learn.
Good day. Stumbled on your site and spent some time reading. Great information. I’ve been applying coatings for some time now, but after that time still hit a stumbling block when putting together estimates for exterior work when doing brick homes that require doors, and the trim package. I’ve got a 4,000 sq ft ranch and has one high side where the driveway slopes down to a garage. Is everyone running linear feet pricing nowadays for fascia, soffit, and dentil moulding? I know different markets will have different tolerances. Trying to soundboard to see what most exterior guys are doing now. Hi there..iam bidding an exterior garage to paint..24 ft x 20 ft length walls..10-12 ft concrete all the way around..and wood panels feont and back of garage that peak at 14 ft..i need to prep (scrap , clan ect) prime then paint exterior..i know i need an exterior primer and paint that works with concrete..i an looking for help with the bidding price..just a ballbark estimate if you guys can help me out. So I have an odd question. Ive been painting for years but this is the first time I have run into this issue. I have a client who has some concrete block walls in his basement he wants painted. The issue is that the walls do not complete a room so there is no way to calculate the square footage as a footprint. However the total wall length is 140 feet by 8 feet high. So how do i calculate labor since I can’t determine the square footage of a room? Do I use the square footage of the surface area of the walls at 140 feet long X 8 feet high? And if so what do I charge per square foot for the surface area? Again this only labor, the client will be buying the block sealer/primer and paint. For a reference, if I was painting a 400 square foot room I would charge 2 dollars a square foot labor. So based off of what I charge using the square footage of the footprint of a room how do I determine what to charge when I cant calculate by the footprint of the room?

Just got the call to bid on 1550 sf new construction, freshly textured, prime and paint ceilings, walls. Also paint doors, trim and baseboards. Customer bought the paint. Initial thought was to go in at around $1500, but after reading many of the comments here I think I would be more in line at around $2300. Would I be way off base with this price? Some painting contractors will try to raise their price if the area is very affluent, but if you have a consistent estimating system, the pricing should take care of itself. More affluent areas usually have larger houses, so your pricing is already going to be higher when considering the job size. If we say it is 2,500 sq ft. a good price could be between $3,500 – $5,000. That can seem expensive to some people, but again, heavy prep work changes everything. It also depends if you are doing the FULL interior; Walls, Base-boards, doors, is it coverable in 1 coat etc.

Or, do I measure each room individually? Say for instance a room is 12 x 12 (width of the walls) x 8 (height of the walls) (384 sq. ft.) , is this the sq footage I charge by? I know I would need to plus and or minus for the doors and windows in the room and also add in the ceiling, but I just want to know would I charge for instance, 384 x $1.25 ? Hey Chandler, we have a house 2565 sq ft with the old wood trim on windows and doors. Doors are solid dark wood. We would paint all walls and doors and trim and baseboards. We also would be painting the cabinets in the kitchen from wood to white. We are trying to determine a final all in labor cost + a timeframe to do the job. The trim is trim time is throwing us off a bit. And personally, thank you very much for your time and sacrifice on this blog you have helped many many people.

When the home owner says they have a 1,600 sqft house that means 1,600 sqft of floor space. That being said, if an owner says it is a certain sqft,you always measure anyway. So if the homeowner says it’s 1,600 sqft and it ended up being 2,000 sqft you could lose $400. ALWAYS measure yourself and double check your math. The math could make or break your painting business
