But every time we mess up (and we still do), we learn from those mistakes and never make the same mistakes twice. Screwing up and failing is how you learn. Be ready to make never-ending tweaks and adjustments to your estimates. There is no way to be in business and not screw up. Learn to embrace those failures, and learn from them. If you do screw up your bid, that’s ok. You have to price yourself incredibly low to actually lose money. So don’t sweat. Just learn.
Hey Chandler, we have a house 2565 sq ft with the old wood trim on windows and doors. Doors are solid dark wood. We would paint all walls and doors and trim and baseboards. We also would be painting the cabinets in the kitchen from wood to white. We are trying to determine a final all in labor cost + a timeframe to do the job. So I tend to bid low and some of the quotes i have read from your posts seemed high, but I am interested in what you would bid and I am on board to give that bid to My client. We recently went from being a custom residential painting company to also painting apartments (we have a college town nearby and there is a LOT of off campus student housing). These are often not well taken care of. Most also want brush and roll because of over spray. What would be a good price for a 4 bdrm 2 bath? Or a 5 bdrm, 4.5 bath that has three floors of living space? Thanks.
Hi Kim, we’re glad you like the site. You’ve asked a really good question. We recommend keeping a consistent pricing structure no matter what the area. Some painting contractors will try to raise their price if the area is very affluent, but if you have a consistent estimating system, the pricing should take care of itself. More affluent areas usually have larger houses, so your pricing is already going to be higher when considering the job size.
