I think it best to measure walls and ceiling areas to be painted. Measuring the floor space only will not give you the actual wall square feet. A wall could be 8’. 10’ or more high. Measuring the floor only could cost you money. If I had a 10×10 x8 high room. Floor space is 100 sq feet but the wall would be 320 sq feet minus door, window and closet. Now if I had the same 10×10 room but 12 feet high. That would be 480 sq ft of wall minus window, door and closet. Using floor square feet of floor only would make your estimate inaccurate. I know some may disagree but that would be the correct way to measure a room for painting. Broomfield House Painting
Hi Chandler, This is such a great blog. I have spent some time reading the comments and find it so interesting. While reading the request from some people i kept thinking is there some way i can help. I myself have been painting and plastering over 26 years and have gained a lot of knowledge in my time. Over the last 12 years i have concentrated my efforts on Scoping measuring and quoting. Over that time i have designed a program that can measure labour, material, travel, margin etc. Weather it be interior, exterior painting or plastering anything realy. I am from New Zealand. We measure in Metric and Liters not imperial and gallons. This is not a problem as i can easily change the formulas to give me the correct measurements. The price of paint and materials are alot different in New Zealand too, but not to worry as i can also change the formulars in the forward costing tab so were reading from the same page. Please let me know if i can help and please delete if this is not the place for me to inquire.

Or, do I measure each room individually? Say for instance a room is 12 x 12 (width of the walls) x 8 (height of the walls) (384 sq. ft.) , is this the sq footage I charge by? I know I would need to plus and or minus for the doors and windows in the room and also add in the ceiling, but I just want to know would I charge for instance, 384 x $1.25 ? Do I increase the sq. footage when I add in trim, doors, and ceiling?

I own a paintung (as does everyone else here of course), but I just wanted to mention my husband was a union painter for almost 10 years in the union, so theres really not job we cant do. With a sprayer or brush, industrial, residential or commercial. From houses to the ships that come to our local shipyard/docks. We decided to start our own business after seeing all the money he was making his company; with being one of the top 2 painters in our city. Unfortunately just days after establishing our business, COVID hit our nation. So, as we are struggling something fierce right now….we do have the skills, talent and ambition to do jobs..that we just need a little assistance finding lately.

Hello I been reading your blog. Filled with great information thank you. I have a question. I have been doing projects for these people for some time. I do a lot of carpentry and painting. They want me to do their interior painting. 1 problem they are planing on retiring and selling the home. It is in great shape, but the wife wanted to paint every room in the 2100 sq foot home. They got a price of $14,000 from 1 painter. I spoke to them and told them the paint and walls for the most part are in good shape and they will not get the money back when they sell for painting. I recommended doing what really needs to be done. I know why did I talk them out of a good money job , I am honest thats why. Problem is the base molding being 8′ with quarter round on a wood floor throughout and all the window casings, doors and door casings need painting. Plus a wall over fireplace a full bedroom ceiling walls closet.Bathroom wall entry from garage room. but all base molding on lower floor and half on upper floor needs to be prep sanded and painted. I will be using epoxy to fill some areas and 2 doors need to come off and work in garage due to large cracks. How do I price such a job that is so spaced out? Please help me I am lost for a price and need the work but don’t want to give it away. Thank you jim House Painting Broomfield CO
Hey Chandler, we have a house 2565 sq ft with the old wood trim on windows and doors. Doors are solid dark wood. We would paint all walls and doors and trim and baseboards. We also would be painting the cabinets in the kitchen from wood to white. We are trying to determine a final all in labor cost + a timeframe to do the job. The trim is trim time is throwing us off a bit. And personally, thank you very much for your time and sacrifice on this blog you have helped many many people.
I hired a painting company to paint my house and garage. Price was about $5,000.Sherwin Williams paint T-1000. When he was questioned about the paint peeling two days after he painted the garage he quit even with a contract not a very professional person. So,now I have to find someone else to paint my house. After 3 weeks of them trying to paint around the rain. The original time frame was 3-4 days.Yes 3 weeks and all that got done was a small two car garage that could have been done in two days.I know he did not prep correctly and properly I will end up having to redo the garage. I went to Sherwin Williams and got the colors. So beware even with a contract and good references.
In July of this year a ***** window screen was damaged and disposed while Prism House was painting our home. The owner agreed to replace the screen but they first tried making it themselves. Unfortunately however, this screen is so ill fitting and poorly made that it won't even stay in place without duck tape. The owner was made aware of the situation and agreed to order an exact replacement from *****. After no follow through by Prism House, I worked with ***** and then forwarded the order forms/information to them in earlier September. At this time, the owner said he would order the screen. No screen has been ordered and Prism House remains unresponsive. The second issue that I am looking to resolve is one of moisture bubbles that appeared on our side door - as soon as the exterior painting was considered complete. I have reached out the Prism House Painting repeatedly via phone, email and text message regarding both of these issues.…Read More Broomfield House Painting
Very nice blog. Pretty good information. BTW, how do you estimate the equipment cost for a painting project? You might have spray machines bought 3 years ago or may be renting such machines. So how much equipment cost will you charge for a given project? Also how about the overhead cost – like insurance, rent, ad, vehicle, utility, salary…etc… ? How do you figure out how much overhead cost to be charged on a given painting project? Broomfield Home Painting

Prepping a house costs anywhere from $0.50 to $2.50 per square foot. This is almost always included in the total project price. However, the DIYer might negotiate some discounts for completing this work on their own. Be warned, proper prep is key to the quality and durability of the finish. If you do this work yourself, the contractor might no guarantee to finished product. House Painting Broomfield Colorado

Hi there I’ve been running my business for over a year and I have come to realize that due to the area I live seems that. When I bid people think it’s way to much because we live in a very small town. I know other painters in my area and they run into the same issue on average my business is only making 350.00 a day if I try to bid it higher it turns people away. How can I help my business earn more? House Painting Broomfield CO

Hello, I am a project manager with Fields Construction Company based in Hoboken, NJ. We are in the process of compiling a list of bidders for a job we have been awarded in Stamford, CT. The building is a 648-unit apartment building on 5 floors over transfer slabs, with 11 buildings over 1 common shared parking garage and garage entrances on 2 street facades. It is a wood framed building that will feature a café, leasing area, fitness center and landscaped courtyard, among other elements. We are looking for painting contractors who consistently perform work in the area and would be able to handle a job of this size and nature. Paint supplies cost anywhere from $10 to $100 or more depending on what you need. Painters will typically provide most of the supplies for a project, but sometimes they will allow you to pay for solely labor if you provide all the materials yourself. You might decide to do a DIY paint job down the road. In which case having these supplies on-hand will save you time and money. Broomfield House Painting
Once you find a painting pro you want to hire, be sure to have a detailed contract that includes the scope of work and prices for all materials and paint that is being used. Find out how many coats of paint will be applied as well as the brand of paint that will be used. Most decent painting pros will use quality brands like BEHR or Sherwin Williams. The contract should also spell out the time frame to complete the project and as well as set up clean up details. Broomfield House Painting
It’ll cost you between $500 and $1,000 to paint the exterior yourself. Not including paint, it’ll cost you no more than $200 to $300 at a home improvement store like Home Depot, Lowes or Menards. You may end up spending more if you buy high-quality products from specialized shops. Professionals can get the same supplies for about half what you’ll pay.

A single gallon of paint can run anywhere from $20 to $80 per gallon. Professionals get a contractor discount of anywhere from 25 to 50 percent. For rough siding, like stucco, you’ll need to use 10% to 20% more paint. Some textures, like wood and stucco, require extra paint because they have more surface to cover in a tiny area compared to smooth siding. Use the highest quality exterior paint your budget will allow for your project. It will look the nicest and save you money by offering better coverage and durability. Better coverage means fewer coats and fewer work hours. You’ll also go a few years longer without needing to shell out more cash for a new coat. How do you know how much paint you're paying for? Here's some helpful math: House Painting Broomfield Colorado
If your home or apartment is more than 30 years old (constructed prior to 1978), there is a high chance that the current paint on the walls and window/door trim contains lead. This is a serious health hazard, especially if there are small children living in the home. If you suspect that there may be lead paint on your walls, its best to test for it and remove it, before putting on new coats of paint. House Painting Broomfield Colorado
